Health & Wellbeing

At Ty Sign Primary, we believe that the health and wellbeing of our pupils, staff, and wider school community is at the heart of successful learning and happy school life.

We are committed to creating a nurturing environment where every child feels safe, and valued. Our approach to wellbeing is proactive, inclusive, and rooted in the Welsh Government’s Whole School Approach to Emotional and Mental Wellbeing.

ELSA

Supporting emotional wellbeing is a key part of our school culture. Our trained ELSA’s (Emotional Literacy Support Assistants) provide dedicated sessions for pupils who may benefit from extra emotional support. These sessions are tailored to help children understand and manage their feelings, develop coping strategies, and build confidence and resilience.

ELSA support covers a range of needs including anxiety, self-esteem, friendships, anger management, and bereavement. We ensure these sessions are delivered in a safe, quiet space where children can talk openly and feel heard.

In addition, all staff are trained to spot early signs of emotional difficulties and to respond with empathy and care. In our school we are fortunate to have three ELSA’s Mrs Gordon (SRB), Miss Morgan (KS1), and Mrs Harvey (KS2).

Children are put forward for ELSA by their class teacher. If you feel like your child would benefit from attending a course of ELSA sessions, then please contact your class teacher to discuss your concerns.

Physical Well-being

We believe physical wellbeing goes hand-in-hand with emotional health. Pupils enjoy regular PE lessons, active playtimes, and a wide range of extra-curricular sports and outdoor learning opportunities. We also teach pupils about healthy eating, sleep, hygiene, and digital safety as part of our health and wellbeing curriculum.

JIGSAW

Jigsaw PSHE is a comprehensive curriculum for Personal, Social, Health and Emotional Education (PSHE) for children aged 3 to 16. It focuses on developing emotional resilience, self-awareness, and essential life skills through a mindful approach and a spiral structure that builds skills year by year. Jigsaw PSHE integrates PSHE with social-emotional learning (SEL), ensuring children learn both important topics and how to apply them. Jigsaw also includes all the statutory requirements for Relationships and Health Education, and Sex Education is also included in the Changing
Me Puzzle (unit).

Jigsaw has two main aims for all pupils:

• To build their capacity for learning.

• To equip them for life.
